What are mole drains?

Mole drains are unlined tunnels (mole channels) in the clay subsoil formed by a mole plow.

Mole Plowed soil cross-cut profile

Drain excess water from the soil profile

Pre-cut disc eliminating trash build-up

Max depth plate &
Replaceable expender

Why install mole drains?

In soil where surface drainage is insufficient for addressing excess water problems, where installing subsurface (tile) drainage is uneconomical due to cost.

In heavy clay soil and low permeability, mole drains can drain excess water from the soil profile.

Benefits of Mole Plowing
in heavy soil:

Suitability of mole drains

Moling is very suitable in heavy soil with a minimum of 45% clay content and less than 20% sand at the mole depth

Best time to install mole drains?

Best installation conditions usually occur during the summer months, when upper soil layer is as dry as possible

Combining mole drains with subsurface drainage

Mole drains can be combined with subsurface drainage to improve drainage performance in heavy clay soil. In this system, mole drains are installed perpendicular or diagonal to the subsurface drainpipes.

Life Expectancy of mole drains

The lifetime of a mole drain depends on the soil's stability and the soil moisture at mole depth during installation

Since the mole drain's effectiveness decreases over time, re-run the mole drains every 3-4 years although been shown to see results for many more years.

Benefits of mole drains

The primary benefit of mole drains is its low cost. Other benefits are improved soil physical properties and increased crop yield in the heavy clay soil.

  • "The extra channels in my soil prior to tile installation greatly increased the effectiveness and ROI of my subsurface drainage system"

    Wendell H.

    North Dakota

  • "After running our plow through our low laying lands on grade with SD DRAIN, the depression areas all drained for the season. Cheap and effective without moving soil or pumping."
